If we’re being honest, you aren’t travelling to Fiji for the shopping, right? You’re probably going for the sun, wide blue skies, crystal clear waters, palm trees, golfing, dining, snorkelling, cruising, diving … but that doesn’t mean you won’t want to put aside some time for Fiji shopping to investigate local wares and produce.

And did somebody say souvenirs?

Fiji is home to a wide range of shops, boutiques, supermarkets, duty-free outlets and markets. Some of the best places for shopping include Port Denarau Marina, Nadi Town, Sigatoka Town and Suva. Many resorts and hotels also have in-house retail outlets.

Most outlets accept major credit and debit cards and some will even accept Australian currency. Fiji shopping hours are usually from 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 3pm Saturday, however many shopping destinations are also open at night and on Sundays.

The larger retail chains stock branded clothes, shoes, electrical goods, perfumes, toys and gifts.

At handicraft markets, you’ll find traditional items such as tapa cloths, woven mats, baskets and fans, carvings and pottery. Not all shops or market stalls will accept credit or debit cards so it’s worth carrying a small amount of local currency if you’re planning on visiting more low-key establishments.

For a taste of local fruit and veggies, try the Nadi Produce Markets, which sells everything from bananas, coconuts, limes and pineapples to jackfruit, soursop, chilli, cabbages and papaya.

A man always looks good in a patterned, brightly coloured, short-sleeved “Bula” shirt, which is available at stores such as Jack’s Of Fiji, so consider at least one for yourself and one for a mate back home.

Remember to look out for the “Fijian Made” stamp when making a purchase as this will ensure you are supporting the local economy.
