Are weddings in Fiji recognised overseas?

Yes.

What documents are required?

  • Birth certificates;
  • Passports with valid legal status;
  • Divorce certificate (if applicable);
  • Death certificate (if the previous spouse is deceased)
  • A Certificate of Single status or certificate of no legal impediment must be provided if:
    •  Marriage between non-residents marrying in Fiji;
    • Marriage between non-resident marrying a local;
    • Marriage by former citizens of Fiji with two or more years residency abroad

How do I apply for a marriage licence?

All overseas marriage applicants are required by law to obtain and sign a marriage licence from a marriage registry or district office prior to the marriage ceremony.

How many days should we arrive in Fiji before our wedding day?

It is recommended you arrive in Fiji at least three days before your wedding day.

What is the legal age to get married?

18.

What hours are the registry offices open?

Monday – Friday, 8am – 4pm. Closed on weekends and public holidays.

What is an Apostille Seal?

An Apostille Seal is a certificate or stamp issued by the Fijian Department of Foreign Affairs.

Do we need a witness?

Yes, but if you’re travelling just as a couple staff at the resort can act as a witness.

Can I bring my own celebrant?

Under the laws of Fiji, only local celebrants are allowed to officiate a marriage; however, an arrangement may be undertaken between the overseas and local celebrant in which the overseas celebrant could participate in the vows and the blessings of the ring, but the local celebrant would solemnise the marriage and sign the marriage certificate.

What about a Catholic marriage?

Couples must present baptism certificates and written confirmations for the right to marry from their parish priest/s, and meet with the local priest.

When is the perfect time to get married in Fiji?

Fiji enjoys a pleasant, tropical climate, so it’s good year round.
