Sustainable Bali Holidays: A Guide For Conscious Travellers

Sustainable Bali Holidays: A Guide For Conscious Travellers

Bali’s natural beauty and welcoming spirit have long made it a favourite destination for Aussie travellers. You can enjoy sunkissed beaches, communal experiences and luxurious resorts perfect for family holidays, romantic getaways and even an unforgettable honeymoon. Now, with growing awareness around sustainability, more visitors are choosing to explore the island in a way that’s kinder to the environment and more connected to the local community.

Sustainable travel in Bali doesn’t mean sacrificing comfort. From eco-friendly accommodation to meaningful local encounters, there are plenty of ways to travel consciously while still enjoying everything the island has to offer.
At Hoot Holidays, we’ve curated a selection of Bali holiday packages that suit ecotourism and sustainable travel.

In this guide, we’ll explore how you can make simple, conscious choices throughout your trip.
Whether it’s where you stay, how you explore, or where you choose to spend your money, your Bali holiday can have a positive impact.

How To Have A Sustainable Holiday

Sustainable travel in Bali means making choices that protect the island’s environment, support local communities and respect traditions. It’s about being mindful; choosing stays, activities, and transport options that reduce your impact:

  • Look for accommodation that reduces waste, conserves energy, and hires locally. Support small businesses by eating at family-run warungs and buying handmade crafts directly from artisans.
  • While public transport is limited, minibuses and shuttles connect major areas, and ridesharing apps offer a more efficient alternative to private cars. In relaxed areas like Ubud and the scenic environment around Mount Batur, cycling is a great low-impact way to explore. Bicycle rental is widely available, with shops located along most main streets, beachsides and boardwalks.
  • Respect for local customs is also key. When visiting temples, it is important to dress modestly. This means covering your shoulders and knees, to wear a sarong and sash, often available at temple entrances, and avoiding swimwear or any other revealing outfit choices when visiting sacred sites.

Our Conscious Bali Picks

Now that we have an understanding of sustainable travel, let’s explore some exciting holiday options. Hoot Holidays makes it easy with a range of Bali packages that are designed with purpose. Each has accommodation or activities that contribute positively to the environment and local community. Every choice counts when it comes to travelling better.

Merusaka, Nusa Dua

Experience this gorgeous 5-star beachfront resort located in the secluded ITDC enclave right on Mengiat Beach, Nusa Dua. Our package includes all-inclusive meals, return flights and airport transfers, as well as daily activities, including yoga, watersports, beach soccer and more. Featured in Hoot Holidays’ collection of conscious stays, the resort blends comfort with meaningful environmental and community initiatives.

The resort engages in a number of waste management initiatives, such as the reduction of single-use plastics in their rooms and facilities, partnering with recycling facilities and composting organic waste to reduce the impact on local landfills.

Boemi Merusaka is a sustainable and environmentally conscious organic garden providing an array of produce from fruits to spices, grown with respect and care. Their produce is cultivated using homemade fertilizer that uses waste from kitchens and gardens, embracing a “closed-loop” system to ensure a consistent commitment to low-impact agriculture.

The resort also prides itself on its partnership with Magi Farm; together they’ve introduced the larvae of the black soldier fly to efficiently reduce the impact of their food waste. The larva consumes twice its weight in waste and produces a nutrient rich fertilizer that is then used to enrich their gardens and produce.

Merusaka Nusa Dua is located on the breathtaking Mengiat Beach. This coastal paradise is not taken for granted, as the resort is a proud collaborator with the International Coastal Cleanup initiative. Together with the local community, Mengiat Beach is regularly restored by removing waste and unwanted debris. This initiative ensures that the shoreline remains pristine and also maintains the health of its ecosystem.

Our package includes return flights and transfers, a daily breakfast buffet and welcome drinks, fruits and flowers upon arrival.

The on-site Kitchen Garden and Mini Farm is a wonderfully engaging feature of the resort. Farm-to-table is a daily practice here. A wide variety of seasonal fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers are grown and nurtured with homemade compost. From bananas and papayas to spinach, ginger, and mushrooms, everything is harvested fresh and used right in the resort’s kitchens.

Guests can explore more than just the greenery, the charming Mini Farm is home to turkeys, ducks, chickens, rabbits and many other adorable tennants. Visitors are encouraged to wander the grounds, observe the gardening process and even to get involved with feeding the animals, touring the mushroom hut, or collecting eggs in the morning. Kids and adults alike will absolutely love these interactive experiences while also being involved with and becoming educated on Padma Resort’s sustainability initiatives.

Samabe’s kitchens focus on fresh, local ingredients, with produce sourced daily from nearby farmers, a thriving herb garden on site, and vegan options available. Guests can even catch fish with local fishermen and have it prepared fresh by resort chefs.

Ties with the local Sawangan community are strong, with dance performances by talented villagers, monthly beach clean-ups, and ongoing support for a nearby orphanage and elder care home. Guests are encouraged to take part in village bicycle tours to experience Bali’s rich communities first-hand.
