Top 5 Things To Do On Holiday in Hong Kong

Top 5 Things To Do On Holiday In Hong Kong

A towering metropolis meets ancient temples, unrelenting nightlife meets the serenity of nature, Eastern culture meets Western abundance; Hong Kong is a city of many faces. Whether you’re a serious traveller and cultural aficionado or just looking for a beautiful escape, Hong Kong has exactly what you need.

Coming up with an itinerary could be an unenviable task. That’s why we’ve created this handy Hong Kong travel guide, giving you a convenient list of the top 5 things to do once you’re there.

1. Lose Yourself In Bustling Markets

Hong Kong is famed for its sleepless markets, they’re almost worth the trip by themselves and you would certainly be missing out on an essential experience of the region, should you choose to skip out on them.
From the heady aromas of Dried Seafood Street in Sheung Wan to the kilometre-long stretch of trendy bargains in Mong Kok’s Ladies’ Market, there are thousands of stores to roam for hours on end in every corner of Hong Kong.

If you find yourself in North Point, the Chun Yeung Street Market is a must-visit. This legendary wet market stems off the broad King’s Road and is packed with buzzing vendors, selling fruit, vegetables, seafood and meat. Chun Yeung is an enchanting portal to the old-school market scene of Hong Kong.

The world-famous Temple Street Night Market is a near-compulsory destination. Every evening from 5PM to 11PM, immerse yourself in stall-after-stall of antiques, jewelry, clothing and precious gems, among many other wares. If the magic of the night market intrigues you, we know of some very conveniently placed accommodation.

2. Take In The View From Victoria Peak

No trip to Hong Kong is truly complete without riding the iconic Peak Tram to the top of Victoria Peak.

Let the anticipation build as you ascend. Once you arrive, you’re rewarded with panoramic views of the skyline, Victoria Harbour, and the surrounding peaceful green hills. Time your visit to catch the sunset, when the sky glows and the city begins to sparkle – it’s an unforgettable experience that captures the essence of Hong Kong.

Be sure to stop by the Peak Tower and refuel  with a wide range of Asian cuisine and seafood, as well as other casual dining options.

We’d also highly recommend the Peak Lookout, a heritage site constructed in the 19th century that has been serving up both Eastern and Western culinary favourites for the past 78 years.

3. ”Touch The Heart” With The Best Dim Sum Around

Speaking of dining, it would be ludicrous to visit Hong Kong and not seek out some of their world-famous dim sum. Although the dish finds its origins in ancient China, Hong Kong has truly claimed it as their own.

When you need a change of pace, there are few better pastimes in the region than to slip away to a local teahouse and sample some of the finest char siu bao, siu mai and egg tarts (plus many more dishes to choose from, too many to list here).

Top Picks For The Best Dim Sum Spots in Hong Kong

  • Tim Ho Wan is a favourite of locals and travellers. With locations in West Kowloon, Central and Sham Shui Po (among others), they are a contemporary institution serving up Michelin-quality dishes at affordable prices.
  • Another well-regarded yet affordable option is One Dim Sum, with locations in Prince Edward and Central. Be sure to check them out for their authentic Cantonese dim sum served in a chic and trendy environment.
  • For a taste of history, be sure to visit the 100-year-old institution of Lin Heung Tea House in Central Hong Kong. Don’t be intimidated by the sheer volume of its patrons; moving past energized servers and sharing your table with other diners are all part of the authentically communal experience.

Let’s not dictate your culinary journey. The “best dim sum in Hong Kong” is highly subjective, be sure to explore your surroundings and decide for yourself, you’ll certainly be spoiled for choice.

4. Escape to Lantau Island

Is city life not for you? Hop on the ferry to Lantau Island and take in the quieter, more traditional side of Hong Kong.

The Majesty of the “Big Buddha”

If you’re seeking a spiritually enriching experience, the island is home to the famous Tian Tan Buddha (AKA the “Big Buddha”), and the nearby Po Lin Monastery.
You can reach this breathtaking landmark via the comfort of Ngong Ping 360 cable car and take in gorgeous views of the island on the way. If you’re up to the challenge, the various hiking trails up to the Buddha are perfect for taking in the beauty and tranquility of the surrounding landscapes.

Take In Old Hong Kong at the Tai-O Fishing Village

The historic Tai-O fishing village is another fantastic location for a day trip to the island. A boat tour is arguably the best option for exploring this wonderfully quirky settlement located on the West coast of the island. Traverse the canals and take in the famous stilt houses and numerous vendors dotted throughout the village.
If you’re lucky to be in Tai-O during mid Autumn, you’ll bear witness to the awe-inspiring Lantern Festival, where hundreds of handcrafted paper lanterns line the canals and bridges, making for a truly once-in-lifetime experience.

The Magic Of Disneyland Is Never Too Far Away

“The happiest place on earth” can be found on the island’s Eastern peninsula. Hong Kong Disneyland offers fun for the entire family with iconic rides and attractions, live entertainment, world-class dining and gorgeous resort hotels that are all absolutely brimming with the magic of Disney we all know and love.

5. Go Off The Beaten Path

Hong Kong is so much more than its well-known city skylines and heritage sites,  the outlying islands and beaches that surround it are well worth their own dedicated visits.

Cheung Chau: A Gorgeous Island to the South-east of Lantau

Let the ferry take you on a scenic route around the island. Once you make land, you’ll be treated to laid-back beaches as well as hiking and cycling paths, perfect for taking in the beautiful seaside vibe.
Be sure to check out Cheung Po Tsai Cave on the Southern coast of the island, a fun detour to live out your treasure hunting fantasies – as legend has it, this is where infamous 19th century pirate Cheng Po Tsai stashed his loot during his many exploits of the waters around Hong Kong.

Pak Tso Wan, the southernmost beach of the island is a wonderful escape from the larger crowds of more popular beaches. As one of the only west-facing beaches on the island, it’s a great place to catch the sunset.

Beautiful Hiking Trails

Hong Kong offers a wide range of hiking trails suitable for all skill levels.
Dragon’s Back Trail on Hong Kong island is complete with fantastic coastal views leading to the white sands of Big Wave Bay.
For sweeping views of the country-side, Shek-O Peak is well worth the effort of ascending. Once you’ve reached the top, you’ll have a perfect view of the trail’s namesake, with the snaking, sandy trail cutting through the green ridges, all the way down to the bay.
