Does relaxing on an island paradise in your own private bure sound like a bit of you? What about direct access to reef edge snorkelling and inner reef pools? If those sound appealing (and let’s be honest – they do!) then White Grass Ocean Resort in Vanuatu should be your next holiday hotspot.
There are fourteen individual bures here to suit singles, couples and even families who need separate beds for the kids. The decorations reflect the distinctive South Pacific location, but you’ll have all the creature comforts you can dream off. Ensuite bathrooms have steaming hot showers, you’ll be kept cool with ceiling fans and can look out over your surroundings from the comfort of a private verandah.
The resort’s facilities aren’t to be scoffed at either. There’s a swimming pool, onsite restaurant, pitch ‘n’ putt golf course and even a guest library to help you while away the hours on island time. You’ll find more than enough opportunities to relax here, with traditional techniques and hot rocks used to ease out any remaining tension.
Located on Tanna Island, you’ll find yourself surrounded by the tranquil blue waters of the South Pacific, with the opportunity to laze on a white sand beach under a shady palm tree.
Make sure you visit the Yasur volcano which rumbles every half hour – perfect for a truly unique holiday experience. You can also try your hand and fishing or snorkelling on the island’s pristine reef.
Your accommodation includes a full breakfast, which is ideal for setting you up for a full-on day of activities. Use the resort’s snorkelling equipment for free, and hop into a sea kayak to paddle to your heart’s content. Finish the day with a game of petanque before sipping on a cool drink as you plan your next day’s activities.
Location
Upon landing at Tanna International Airport following a short 40 minute flight from Port Vila, the resort’s smiling staff assist you in the collection of your luggage and then drive you the 2 kms to your resort. The volcano is located on the other side of the island approximately a 90 minute scenic tour.

Within the resort there is direct access to reef edge snorkeling or inner reef pools, a swimming pool, restaurant, guest library, and massage hut, making the resort your idyllic home away from home. An activities bure houses all of the equipment utilised by guests in the pursuit of their upgraded complimentary activities, such as snorkeling, mountain bike riding, petanque, pitch putt golf and kayaking.
Two 4WD safari vehicles are used to transport guests to the array of activities on offer, the most popular of which, is, of course, the mighty daily (subject to weather conditions)Yasur Volcano safari.
Yasur Volcano Safari – experience the awesome majesty of mighty Yasur Volcano. Travel by 4wd safari vehicle to the far side of Tanna. As you make your journey you will pass through villages and farms, and see fascinating glimpses of village life. Midway through you will crest Mt. Loanialu and will observe your destination – Yasur volcano, and the black sand surf beaches and Sulphur Bay beyond.
You will never find enough time to get bored with the many activities available on Tanna. Experience horse riding at Lenakel Cove or snorkeling on the reefs near the lodge. Before going to the volcano stop at a John Frum Village and learn about this unique group of locals who have adhere to their belief in a strange cargo cult. On Fridays you can assist to their dancing and singing and join in their feast.
Dining
The restaurant and terrace takes in magnificent sea vistas and breathtaking sunsets. Guests can relax at the bar or on the terrace and enjoy locally produced cuisine prepared with ingredients from the local waters, gardens, and farms.
Guests can enjoy the unparalleled Pacific Ocean views and sunsets from the comfort of the new restaurant and terrace whilst the interior boasts soaring cathedral ceilings and artisan made woven thatched roofs. A larger lounge area is a tranquil haven for guests to enjoy a quiet drink, or to read a book or participate in a board game. The kitchen has dramatically increased in size also and consequently new menu items have been added to the repertoire of organic, seasonal, Pacific bounty.
Room Facilities
Fourteen individual bures have sea views and lie within the manicured gardens of White Grass Ocean Resort. Each has unique decorative elements which reflect the distinctive South Pacific locale, yet incorporates the comforts of hot water showers in en-suite bathrooms, ceiling fans, bed canopy nets, and private balconies. Bures are available for singles and couples as well as family bures accommodating up to four people.
Twelve of the fourteen bures have exposed beams, timber ceilings and thatched roofs, fully tiled bathrooms, timber plantation shutters, mini bars and coffee and tea making facilities. Two generators allow full use of all electrical appliances over 24 hours, and the decor of the bures has undergone soft furnishings and painting.
Family Offers
Tanna is not recommended for young children, however the resort is happy to accommodate them. Children are considered as 4-11 years. Infants under 4 years stay free. Child minding services are available to be booked on arrival at the resort.
Mount Yasur
Over the centuries, ash rain from Yasur has built up huge black sand dunes, creating a stark moonscape. Visitors can climb up to the crater rim, where they are treated to a magnificent fireworks display. Night time viewing is best. A minimum 2 night stay is recommended so that if there is low cloud or the volcano is less active yoy may get a second chance to see Yasur in all it’s glory.
