There are so many activities and tours in Port Vila visitors run the risk of never getting around to seeing the rest of Vanuatu (though you still should!). Port Vila is the only town on Efate and is surrounded by attractions - you can shop at markets in the morning, splash around waterfalls in the afternoon, and be back on the beach for an incredible tropical sunset!

Where to stay

Whether you want to be immersed in the lively atmosphere of the city, or relax in a more tranquil area, Port Vila accommodation can cater for you. Spacious villas, individual bungalows or rooms with balconies overlooking the Pacific are all on the accommodation menu, so you have the freedom to choose something that suits your own unique tastes.

In Port Vila

Vale Vale Beachfront Villas has apartments which feature private plunge pools and open onto a 700-metre-long beach where you can swim with sea turtles. All of this is just 10 minutes from Port Vila's centre. Just up the road, Breakas Beach Resort is an adults-only resort that has access to one of the best surf beaches in Port Vila. Nasama Resort has seafront apartments, an infinity pool and an ocean rock pool - all of which have incredible ocean views.

Out of town

Eratap Beach Resort is 20 minutes from Port Vila. Surrounded by coastal forest, Eratap Point gives visitors the feeling of seclusion and privacy. Nearby, Aquana Beach Resort borders a calm lagoon with ideal for swimming and kayaking.

What to do

Port Vila is a lively city on the edge of Vila Bay. Spreading out around the area are Port Vila beaches and lagoons, while small islands sit just offshore. In the town itself, there are more markets, souvenir stalls and waterfront restaurants than you can shake a tam tam at - in short, you will never have an excuse to complain that there is nothing to do.

Port Vila's energy is concentrated in the busy shopping areas, so you can get a taste of local life and shop for souvenirs at the same time. Colourful markets are crammed with stalls peddling local handicrafts and fresh local produce, with yams sitting alongside carved wooden masks and trinkets made from shells and beads. While shopping in Port Vila, stay away from the markets and shops when the cruise ships are in town, as prices can get bumped up at these times.

The National Museum of Vanuatu is a mandatory stopover on your Port Vila tour. This exquisite building is your one-stop shop for a complete history of Vanuatu, so it's the best place to get a better understanding of the country. The Vanuatu Cultural Centre is another point of interest for anyone who wants to learn more about ni-Vanuatu culture through artefacts and exhibitions.

Water is everywhere you look here and there are so many places to do some awesome snorkelling. In Mele Bay, the small, private islands of Irikiki and Hideaway Island offer great snorkelling options, with an impressive array of colourful fish and coral to keep you entertained.

After a day of splashing around in the water, find a spot on the Port Vila beaches and watch the sunset - Mele Bay is frequently painted with bright colours as the sun goes down.

A little outside of town is the Mele Cascades, one of the most beautiful and refreshing places to spend an afternoon, with plenty of Port Vila attractions to take in. The cascades are a series of turquoise pools tumbling down the hillside in a photogenic terrace formation, before finishing up as a 35-metre waterfall. Swim, snap photos, or simply stop and stare - just give yourself plenty of time to linger and enjoy the natural beauty of the surrounds.

To get out of town, take a trip around the ring road - it runs all the way around Efate and is one of the few sealed roads in the whole country. There are plenty of places to stop and you'll get a look at traditional village life, which has a completely different pace to high-energy Port Vila.
