Hong Kong has some big-ticket events that you might just want to plan your holiday around.

The biggest, and brightest, event in Hong Kong has to be Chinese New Year. In 2020 (the year of the Rat, for those who are interested in the Chinese Zodiac) it will be celebrated from January 25 - 27. The fireworks display erupting over the harbour is always spectacular. The street parades are loud, colourful and uniquely belong to Hong Kong. Throw in a host of local and international performers and you have a show that’s not to be missed.

Only Hong Kong can take an ancient sport like Dragon Boat Racing and turn it into a modern world-class festival. Locals and tourists alike line the waterways to watch three days of hectic, almost chaotic, paddling action. The sound of beating drums, race crews yelling out instructions, and fans cheering will fill the air night and day.  The 2020 carnival is scheduled to run from June 26 - 28.

The starter’s gun fired at Hong Kong’s first horse race back in 1841. The locals love their horse racing and the season runs from September through until July. The two main tracks are Happy Valley (about eight minutes from Hong Kong Central) and Sha Tin in the New Territories (25 minutes from Central). There’s a real party atmosphere on “Happy Wednesdays” at Happy Valley Racecourse when the thrill of racing mixes with live music, cocktails, and epic victory celebrations.

Rugby lovers have been pouring into Hong Kong since 1976 for the famous Hong Kong Sevens tournament. In 2020 the tournament will run from April 2 - 6 with most of the action centring around the Hong Kong Stadium. Fiji has won the men’s event for the past five years. Be in Hong Kong next year to add your support to Australia’s cause. Even if you don’t go to the rugby, the city is firing on all cylinders during this event.
