We spoke to a few the staff from Plantation Island Resort and asked them what they have missed the most during the travel bans, what they love the most about Fiji and where they work and what they would recommend for you on your next Fiji visit. Read their answers below.

Hoot: What is your name and role at Plantation Island Resort?

Alex: My name is Alex and I am the General Manager for Plantation Island Resort. My team and I have been maintaining Lomani Adults Only Island Resort and the popular Plantation Island Resort. I oversee the overall management of the resort, supporting our team of staff, achieving our strategic plans. Manage key responsibilities in sustainable tourism, local communities, and the environment.

We are currently constructing our new order of elevated Hygiene & Risks elements of our business deliveries and its new standards.

Hoot: What do you love most about what you do?

Alex: There is nothing more rewarding when I view feedbacks received of how we valued our guests and their holiday experiences. We definitely not perfect, but when we recognised by being ordinary people providing extraordinary experiences our guests thoroughly enjoyed, it is the ultimate compliment.

Hoot: What would you always recommend to a guest?

Alex: A village tour or cultural tour and to relax as the sun goes down with a beautiful “Seinibua” cocktail.

Hoot: How have travel bans affected your business?

Alex: Travel bans have affected many staff, our partners, our local communities and business. During COVID-19 lockdown we also had a tropical cyclone passed by Fiji that affected many who were already suffering so we provided blankets, building materials, food and more. It has been difficult for Fiji and our staff.

Hoot: If you were to recommend Fiji as a Destination post COVID – what would you say?

Alex: We missed you all, join us in Fiji it is safe with clean oceans, enjoy the local people who have been waiting for you. They will enjoy your stories as much as you enjoy theirs.

Hoot: In a few words, describe what makes Fiji so special for you?

Alex: Fiji is special to me as it is my place of birth, after working in the Cook Islands, Vanuatu, PNG, Asia and all over Australia it is far more rewarding being back in Fiji. The staff are great, they love people and even open their homes to visitors with no hesitation at all.

Hoot: What is your name and role at Plantation Island Resort?

Michael: Michael, Activities and Ocean Sports.

Hoot: What would you always recommend to a guest?

Michael: I strongly recommend visiting our villages where western cultures meet our culture, respect and authenticity. Allow it to collide. How visitors enjoy the inner sincerity of the local communities even if they have very little. Come into our families for a few hours and return to your Resort or Hotel room. Share what it is like being Fijian.

Hoot: Describe in a few words, what makes Fiji so special to you?

Michael: We treat you all with respect and genuine caring. We treat you like family. We treat you as one of us. We will also miss you when we sing “Isa Lei” Look forward to when we “Sota Tale”

Hoot: Why would you recommend Fiji for families?

Michael: Fijians as other Pacific Islanders Family is part of us we function. Our love for our children and family members and when you one of us – you become us.

Hoot: Why would you recommend Fiji for couples

Michael: Fiji is somewhere they can be themselves and knowing we will laugh, care, serve and respect them.

Hoot: What is your favourite thing to do in Fiji?

Michael: Fishing and more fishing. I enjoy snorkelling and I love my job and enjoy sharing what I know with our guests.

Hoot: What is your name and role at Plantation Island Resort?

Rusi Mar: I am Rusi Mar, The Duty Manager at Plantation Island Resort, I oversee the resort during the afternoon shifts, late check-ins, guest dining, functions, weddings and much more.

 Hoot: What do you love most about what you do?

Rusi Mar: I can keep going on till my last breath and that is Meeting People. I love it. I also get so excited seeing kids faces feeling sad about leaving because they all had a great time at the Plantation Island Resorts facilities and activities.

Hoot: What would you always recommend to a guest to do when they are in Fiji?

Rusi Mar: Just try and take in the slow Fiji Time, have a little swim, have a little walk, have a snooze on the hammock and let scenery and beautiful sunsets overwhelm you? Just relax, sometimes it can frustrate oneself but that is what the holidays about in Fiji.

Hoot: In a few words, describe what makes Fiji so special to you.

Rusi Mar: Fiji is a very safe country; it matters to us when you don’t enjoy your visit to my village or community even if I have so little to offer you?

I read about Luxury Travels & Destinations, but it has to have sincere & caring peoples too thus I think I love to care for our guests as genuinely as I can.

Hoot: What is your favourite thing to do in Fiji?

Rusi Mar: I go hunting and foraging in the oceans, my ancestors have done for centuries, I enjoy exploring the wildlife. At times I take our regular & loyal guests to the city and community areas when on days off and I am always pleased to see themselves enjoying themselves.

Hoot: What is your name and role at Plantation Island Resort?

Jope: Jope, a General Worker, working in the Grounds and Landscaping Department and overseeing the Bula Bikes.

Hoot: What do you love most about what you do?

Jope:  I enjoy working here for over 17 years because of the people I work with and also with guests who continue to return year on year. I love seeing our guests cycling around the resort throughout their stay. I enjoy taking groups out snorkelling, skiing, paragliding and other water activities.

Hoot: How have travel bans affected you?

Jope: It has affected myself and my family. It has been very challenging in the city where we rented so we left for the village where I planted and went fishing daily to fend for my family. It will have a long term impact our people especially the children and their education.

Hoot: Why would you recommend Fiji for groups?

Jope:  We love wedding groups they are always good fun. Most times when there are big conferences delegates bring their families and enjoy their post-conference another week. Lovely

Hoot: If you were to recommend Fiji as a destination to visit post-COVID – what would you say?

Jope: Bula – we missed you all welcome back. Let me show you some changes since COVID-19 at the Cultural Bure and Activities.

Hoot: Do you have anything else you would like to add?

Jope: We miss our family (regular guests), We miss our colleagues (LWOP). We miss seeing visitors and guests visiting our Resorts and Fiji. We love you!
