What makes Nananu-i-Ra island special?
Nananu-i-Ra translates to "Daydream of the West" and this island certainly feels like a fantastical tropical paradise. According to legend, two young lovers ran away to this very spot. The young chief, Vanua Levu fell in love with a young woman on Viti Levu, but the elders of the island forbade their relationship. They fled to this island and it became their sanctuary.
The most popular beach is Oni Beach, which is on the north side of the island - in fact, it's known as one of the best in all of Fiji.
Here you'll find ample spots for total relaxation. Take your novel, sunscreen, towel, sunnies, hat and drink and you've got everything you need for a completely chilled out afternoon.
If you want something a little more thrilling, there are many opportunities to go kitesurfing and windsurfing. This is actually a fabulous place to try these activities, as between April and October the winds are ideal.
Venture inland and explore the lush, untouched rainforest on one of the many trails. You can hike to the highest peak and get some stunning views of the surrounding seas and islands. Be sure to pack your hiking boots or sneakers, as this walk takes a few hours to half a day.
Where to stay
The island is very easy to get to by ferry from Viti Levu, where there are many amazing resorts that are perfect for families. Check out the Hideaway Resort and Spa or Outrigger on the Lagoon - Fiji. The latter is right in the heart of the island and has some great extras for kids, such as the Little Riggers and Beach Riggers Club programs.
