Discover Phuket for the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure

What’s your holiday persona? Whether you’re an adventurer or relaxation-seeker, Thailand has something to suit everyone. To make the most of your time, base yourself in Phuket for easy travel to iconic attractions and bucket list experiences. Whether you’re island hopping through the world-famous Phi Phi Islands or visiting the iconic Phang Nga Bay, you’ll never be short of things to do and explore in Phuket. We’ve compiled a list of must-see attractions.

 1.  Experience Phuket Vegetarian Festival

The Phuket Vegetarian Festival is a nine-day extravaganza that starts in early October. Indulge in delicious vegan and vegetarian cuisine cooked using traditional Chinese methods while you watch ceremonies, street processions and immerse yourself in Thai culture.

While food is a big part of this festival, a unique experience for revellers is watching the ritualistic face piercing. Yes, face piercing. Not for those with a weak stomach, this custom involves self-imposed mutilation of the cheeks, arms, backs and tongues with swords and machetes. It’s believed that while the participants (known as the Mah Song) are possessed by the Gods, they are unable to feel pain. Devotees believe these agonising acts will purify themselves and the community.

 2.  Go scuba-diving at the Phi Phi Islands

For those seeking a serene experience, head to the Phi Phi Islands. Comprised of jagged, limestone cliffs, these eye-catching landmarks are the perfect place for the explorers amongst your group. An ideal diving destination for novices through to experts, the Phi Phi Islands offer travellers a variety of dive sites within a small area. The most popular place for divers is off the Southern tip of Koh Bida Nok. In this shallow cove, swimmers are greeted with beautiful star corals and schools of colourful fish.

Getting to the Phi Phi Islands from Phuket is easy, with most travellers opting for a ferry or speed boat. Transports depart from Phuket and take about two hours - a slightly longer travel time, but worthwhile for the breathtaking visual spectacle (and multiple Instagram-worthy opportunities) that await.

 3.  Discover a Hidden Beach

After all that adventuring, it’s time to wind down. Pull up a chair and relax on Freedom Beach, a hidden paradise only accessible via longtail boat. Considered by some to be one of the prettiest beaches on Phuket Island, this stunning locale is covered with impossibly soft, white sand and surrounded by glistening shades of blue and turquoise water. The quickest route is from the Southern end of Patong Beach. The journey itself is an experience. On your way, you will pass Merlin Beach, Paradise Beach and Tri Trang Beach. A round trip costs between $57 to $71AUD depending on the number of passengers.

 4.  Treat yourself

After a busy day experiencing the sights and sounds of Thailand, we recommend indulging in a pamper session at the Phuket Marriott Resort and Spa, Merlin Beach. Unwind with the Heavenly Signature Massage - the resort’s signature treatment that soothes the nerves relieves body aches and promotes deep relaxation. Follow it up with dinner and a cheeky cocktail at one of the 10 on-site restaurants and bars. Our favourite is Ariake, awarded Thailand Tatler's Best Restaurant of 2017 and winner of TripAdvisor’s Award of Excellence. Ariake overlooks the lagoon pool and features a teppanyaki table and sushi bar.
