Thailand’s largest island, Phuket, is the perfect place to situate yourself if you’re looking for a balance between a high-octane holiday loaded with excitement, and a placid getaway from the busy modern world. Sitting in the south of Thailand and skirted by white sandy beaches lined with palms trees and licked by lapping blue waters, Phuket is going to offer you superb hospitality and unbeatable value for accommodation.
Things to Do in Phuket
With Phuket being such a thriving tourist spot, there is a huge number of different things you can do here. Whether you’re into the laid-back lifestyle and want to spend your time sitting under a palm tree pondering on how relaxing life is, or if you want to be a little more active and exploratory, you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for in Phuket.
The main beach in Phuket is Patong, and here you’ll find all sorts of different activities like renting kayaks, snorkelling, beach games, fishing and many, many bars and restaurants where you can spend as little or as long as you like. Your best bet is to spend one of your first days in Phuket walking along Patong beach and taking in all of the activities which are available and then plan out how and when you want to do them as your vacation goes on.
But while Patong is the most popular beach in Phuket, it doesn’t necessarily offer the best opportunities for swimming if you’re looking for those crystal-clear waters you’ve seen on all the post cards. When it comes to swimming, Kamala, Kata and Karon beaches are each incredible destinations during the higher tourism seasons. And Panwa beach will also give you an equally beautiful spot for swimming year-round.
In terms of specific activities you can do in Phuket, there’s quite a broad set of opportunities. So we’ve listed just a couple of our top recommendations. If you manage to tick off just a few of these you’re going to have had an incredible holiday!
- Phuket Aquarium – This is somewhere the kids will love! Let the fish dazzle you with all of their impressive colours and varieties in shapes and sizes!
- Yoga Classes – There are loads of different places that offer yoga classes in Phuket and taking one or two is going to put the relaxation cherry on top of your chilled-out holiday sundae!
- Mini-Golf – This is another great family activity and there are even a couple of different courses where you can test your skills. Adventure Mini Golf in the Bang Tao Beach area and Dino Park in Kata Beach both offer great courses that are suitable for all ages.
- James Bond Island – Known locally as Khao Phing Kan, you might recognise this place from Roger Moore’s Bond film, ‘The Man with the Golden Gun’. Rent a longtail boat and driver and head out into Phang Nga Bay northeast of Phuket to visit this place along with a stunning array of other islands and scenery.
Where to Stay in Phuket
Where you stay in Phuket is going to be dependent on what kind of atmosphere you’re looking for in your holiday. If the busy nature of Patong appeals to you and you’re wanting a place that’s a good jump off for lots of activities then you can’t go past Patong Merlin Hotel. This is a well-priced facility which has accommodation to suit all types of holiday-makers, from intimate couples looking for privacy, through to larger family rooms. There’s also a variety of different pools here and hotel facilities so you’ll never be bored when you’re on the resort grounds.
If you want to stay closer to the more relaxed Kata and Karon areas (which are a little less crowded than Patong), then take a look at the Centara Karon Resort, Kata Beach Resort and Spa and the Katathani Resort. Each of these places offer their own unique elements of excellence and with affordable prices that only make the experience that much sweeter.
